Woman who struck, killed man changing tire on I-5 was checking Facebook, records say

A woman was checking Facebook on her cell phone when she struck a 78-year-old man changing a tire on the side of Interstate 5 in Tacoma, court records say.

Pierce County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Karley Leann Cecil, 29, with vehicular homicide in connection with Monday’s death of Kiyang Park.

Park was stopped on the shoulder of the collector area that joins northbound I-5, 38th Street, state Route 16 and City Center exit changing his left front tire while his wife sat in the car.

Cecil was traveling northbound on I-5 when she hit Park about 8:40 a.m.

“Defendant admitted to not looking at the roadway when she struck Mr. Park as she passed by,” prosecutors wrote in charging papers.

Cecil was checking Facebook on her cell phone, records say.

She pulled over after hitting Park and called 911. Park was pronounced dead at the scene.
