Deputies arrest man suspected of attacking 83-year-old at Tacoma transit center

Deputies arrested a man Sunday who they suspect attacked an 83-year-old man at a downtown transit center in Tacoma while trying to rob him.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies responded about 12:50 p.m. Thursday to a report of an assault at the Tacoma Transit Center at South 10th Street and Commerce Street, sheriff’s department spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss said. There, deputies found the 83-year-old man with blood on his face and a severe cut.

Moss said the man was minding his own business at the bus stop when another man walked up to him unprovoked and punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

Then, the attacker sat down next to the man and asked him for money. The older man said he didn’t have any, and the attacker left.

Surveillance footage captured the incident, and using images of the suspect, the sheriff’s department issued a bulletin asking the public for help identifying the man.

The next day, officers from Tacoma Police Department saw a man at a bus stop in Northeast Tacoma who they later realized was wearing the same clothes as the suspect in the bulletin. Officers were not able to find the man again that day.

Police saw the man again Sunday on Pacific Avenue and arrested him for investigation of first-degree robbery.
