Driver rams Puyallup police cars at apartment complex, flees from officers

Puyallup police were searching for a driver who rammed into two police cars at an apartment complex Tuesday morning and then fled from officers.

A woman was arrested as the incident unfolded, but police have not located the person who drove into the police cars.

Officers from Puyallup Police Department responded at about 7:25 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 2500 block of South Meridian for a report of a suspicious vehicle, according to a news release from the department. A 911 caller told police people in a silver SUV were trying to break into another vehicle in the parking lot.

At the scene, police found two people in the SUV and tried to talk with them. Then, the driver rammed into two unoccupied police cars while driving away.

As the driver fled, a female passenger got out of the vehicle and ran into a wooded area. She was located in the parking lot of a senior care facility near 23rd Avenue Southeast and 7th Street Southeast. She was arrested after allegedly breaking into a vehicle.

No officers were hurt in the incident. Police said they were unable to pursue the suspect’s vehicle, citing state law.

“The crime did not rise to what is allowed to pursue under state law,” the department said in a post.

Police said officers started to pursue the fleeing vehicle because responding officers believed police on the scene had been assaulted. When pursuing officers learned the rammed police vehicles were unoccupied when they were hit, the pursuit was called off.

Police said the suspect’s car had significant damage to its front end, and the suspect was driving recklessly “for some time” after leaving the scene.

The suspect’s car was last seen near a supermarket at the intersection of 39th Avenue Southwest and 9th Street Southwest.
