Suspected DUI driver in wreck near Puyallup that killed Graham woman has been charged

A woman suspected of driving under the influence of drugs who crashed her car into a tree near Puyallup on Saturday, killing her 54-year-old passenger, has been charged.

Sabra Ann Jury, 48, was charged Monday with vehicular homicide in Pierce County Superior Court.

She pleaded not guilty at arraignment and bail was set at $100,000.

Jury is charged in the death of Kimberly E. Rosoto of Graham, who was sitting in the passenger seat of Jury’s 2005 Nissan Altima on Saturday afternoon as the women went east on state Route 512 near Canyon Road East.

Washington State Patrol troopers said Jury’s car left the road and struck a tree. Rosoto died later that day at an area hospital.

Police said they found a hypodermic needle on the driver’s floorboard of the crashed car. Results from toxicology tests for Jury taken after the wreck are pending.

Charging papers gave this account:

A state trooper responded about 12:40 p.m. Saturday to a report of a car-versus-tree collision on eastbound state Route 512, just west of Canyon Road East.

At the scene, the trooper saw a car in a ditch that appeared to have traveled a few hundred feet through grass before striking a tree on the front passenger side of the vehicle. According to the declaration for determination of probable cause, the driver, Jury, and passenger, Rosoto, were still in the car.

The trooper spoke with Jury, who was conscious, while attending to Rosoto, who was in and out of consciousness. Asked what happened, Jury told the trooper a red car had pulled in front of her and slowed down, according to the probable cause statement. She said she tried to avoid the vehicle.

A witness told police a red vehicle appeared to pull in front of Jury’s car, and her car then left the road to the right and struck a tree.

The trooper noted that it appeared Jury had not tried to stop her car.

“Based on the path of travel, it appeared that (Jury’s) vehicle left the shoulder in a straight line, and did not appear to have attempted to make any effort to brake or make any corrections of any kind before striking the tree,” prosecutors wrote, quoting the trooper.

The trooper noted that he had trouble understanding what Jury was saying in subsequent questions due to “slurred” and “incoherent” speech.

Troopers noticed a hypodermic needle on the floor of the driver’s side while extricating Jury from the car, according to the probable cause statement. Troopers also found a bottle of methadone, a medication used to treat opioid use disorder and for pain management, on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Jury and Rosoto were transported to Tacoma General Hospital. There, troopers said they continued to have difficulty understanding Jury due to slurred speech. According to the probable cause statement, blood was drawn from Jury for toxicology testing.
