Man struck by 2 cars in Tacoma taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries
Police shut down a section of South Orchard Street in Tacoma on Tuesday morning after a 38-year-old man was struck and critically injured by two vehicles.
The man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Wendy Haddow said.
A woman called 911 about 3:25 a.m. to report that she’d hit someone with her car in the 3500 block of South Orchard Street. Haddow said the woman was driving north on the road when, out of nowhere, she felt that she hit something.
At first, the woman wasn’t sure what she had hit, Haddow said. She started backing up her car to block the roadway. That’s when another driver, also going north, swerved around the woman’s car and also struck the pedestrian.
Haddow said she wasn’t sure if the man was lying in the roadway or if he walked into the roadway when he was first hit. South Orchard Street was closed between Ramsdell Street and South 35th Street while police investigated. A collision investigation team responded to the scene.
Neither of the drivers who struck the man showed signs of impairment.
The road was reopened by about 7:45 a.m.
