Spanaway homeowner shoots, kills man breaking into his house, deputies say

Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a homicide in Spanaway on Thursday morning after a homeowner shot at two men he said were breaking into his house, killing one.

Deputies responded about 4:20 a.m. to the incident in the 100 block of 165th Street East, sheriff’s department spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss said. Moss said the homeowner’s sister called 911 to report the incident.

The 31-year-old man who shot at the suspected intruders told police two men tried to break in through his back door. Moss said the man shot at them, and the break-in suspects fled. One of the suspects, a 24 year-old man, collapsed in the front yard, where deputies found him dead.

Deputies searched the area for the second break-in suspect but could not locate him. Detectives and forensics investigators are on the scene investigating the incident.

The homeowner and his sister were taken to a sheriff’s department precinct to be interviewed by investigators. No one has been arrested. Deputies said detectives will complete the investigation and forward the case to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
