Pedestrian fatally struck by driver suspected of DUI in Orting hit-and-run on SR 162
A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Wednesday night in Orting on state Route 162. The driver who hit the man left the scene but was later found and arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide.
The 32-year-old man was hit on the state Route west of Orville Road East at about 8:15 p.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The incident fully blocked state Route 162 in both directions.
Trooper Robert Reyer said the pedestrian was walking east on state Route 162 and was partially in a traffic lane when he was struck from behind by a 22-year-old man driving a 2009 Dodge Ram. Reyer said that shortly before the collision, 911 callers reported seeing a pedestrian on the road.
The Washington State Patrol, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and other aid responded. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified.
The driver who caused the crash and the car they were driving were located and arrested at a home in Bonney Lake, Reyer said. The car had damage consistent with hitting a pedestrian, and troopers believe the man was driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
