Men killed in Lakewood gun battle and car crash have been identified

Two men ejected from their vehicle in a crash following a rolling gun battle on the streets of Lakewood on Friday have been identified.

Cornelius Cox, 25, of Lacey and James Hopson, 41, of Tacoma died in the incident in the 11200 block of Gravelly Lake Drive SW, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The medical examiner had not yet determined a manner and cause of death on Tuesday.

Police told KIRO they received reports about 8:30 p.m. Friday of people in two SUVs exchanging gunfire near 108th Street Southwest and Lakeview Avenue Southwest.

Shortly thereafter, the SUV Cox and Hopson were in crashed near 112th Street Southwest and Gravelly Lake Drive.

A third man was taken to a local hospital.
