Hikers find human remains in Pierce County near Carbonado

Pierce County deputies are investigating after a pair of hikers came across human remains Sunday while hiking in a remote area near Carbonado.

The remains have not been identified. In a news release, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said it was working with the medical examiner’s office to identify the remains and determine a cause of death.

One of the hikers called 911 at about 2:40 p.m. to report what he found, according to the release. Deputies and a search and rescue coordinator responded to the area, and the two hikers led them to the location.

On Monday, detectives returned to the area and recovered the remains.
