Man struck and killed in hit-and-run on SR-7 in Spanaway, troopers say
A 22-year-old Tacoma man was struck and killed early Thursday morning by two vehicles on state Route 7 in Spanaway, the Washington State Patrol said. One of the vehicles hit the man and didn’t stop driving.
The incident occurred about 12:54 a.m. in the southbound lanes of state Route 7 just before Field Road East. According to a WSP news release, the victim was standing in the roadway when the first vehicle struck him and stopped on the right shoulder.
Then the second vehicle hit the man and continued driving south.
Trooper Robert Reyer said the incident is being investigated as a hit and run. The make and model of the vehicle that left the scene is unknown, and detectives are working to identify the driver. It’s unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
The first driver was a 22-year-old Lakewood woman, who had no signs of impairment from drugs or alcohol, Reyer said. Reyer said there’s no evidence of wrongdoing on her part. He said it’s unclear why the victim was in the road.
“You’re on the road, you’re driving. The last thing you expect is someone to all of the sudden be in front of your car,” Reyer said.
No one else was injured. The incident blocked the roadway for almost four hours.
