Update: Tacoma hit-and-run in which woman killed husband wasn’t intentional, police say

A 52-year-old man was hit with a car and killed Thursday night in a hit-and-run in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood. Police initially suspected the man’s wife deliberately killed him but later determined the collision was not intentional.

The victim’s 41-year-old wife was located Friday and booked into jail for investigation of felony hit-and-run.

Tacoma Police Department officers were called about 10:05 p.m. to South 10th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, near People’s Park, for a report of a man struck by a vehicle that left the scene. There, police said officers found an unresponsive man in the road and began to try to save the man’s life.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Witnesses at the scene identified the driver of the vehicle as the man’s estranged wife. Police said Friday morning that the woman had not been located and that they were investigating the man’s death as a homicide. Detectives and crime scene technicians responded to the scene to gather evidence and collect information from witnesses.

Through further investigation, including video surveillance of the incident and interviews with the victim’s wife, police determined the collision itself was not deliberate and that the victim ran in front of the woman’s vehicle while it was moving.

Police did not say what led up to the collision.
