State auditor won’t pursue complaint by open-records group

The state auditor has declined to pursue a complaint filed by open-records advocates against Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist.

The Washington Coalition for Open Government filed the complaint May 26, contending that Lindquist misused public funds to defend himself in a legal case involving his personal phone records.

In most cases, the auditor’s authority is limited to complaints involving state employees and agencies. Agency spokesman Thomas Shapley said the coalition’s complaint fell outside the auditor’s authority.

“It has to do with a conflict of interest in an ongoing court case,” he said. “Just not within our purview.”
