Registered sex offender who tried to rape Pierce County woman is headed back to prison

Michael McLeod hasn’t spent much time out of jail since 2020. Now, he’s headed back to prison.

Shortly after his release following a King County assault conviction in January 2021, the 40-year-old moved to the Midland area, registered as a sex offender and then broke into a neighboring woman’s home to try to rape her.

McLeod accepted a plea deal on charges of attempted first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and second-degree theft last month, court documents say. Pierce County Superior Court Judge Jennifer Andrews sentenced him to 11 years to life in prison last week on the recommendation of prosecutors.

The attempted rape and burglary charges, along with McLeod’s second-degree assault conviction from 2021, are considered strike offenses, which prompted his indeterminate sentence. He received credit toward the sentence for jail time served since his arrest in January 2021.

In the earlier case from February 2020, a Seattle woman said McLeod chased her through an apartment and tried to strangle her with a phone cord, court documents say. She managed to wrestle away from him and scream into a hallway for help.

The Midland-area woman escaped from McLeod after hitting him in the genitals, according to court documents. He admitted to breaking into her home and trying to rape her during a presentencing interview with officials last month.
