Tacoma police arrest man suspected of murder in July shooting outside gas station

A 25-year-old man suspected of shooting and killing a person outside of a gas station and convenience store in Tacoma last month was arrested Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The Tacoma Police Department announced Tuesday evening that the suspect had been arrested in the city. Jail records show he was booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first- and second-degree murder.

The man is suspected in the July 30 killing of 39-year-old Ronnal Hines, who was shot near the 5400 block of South Orchard Street in South Tacoma. Police responded to that area at 5:23 a.m. that day for a report of two men shooting at each other. Police said when officers arrived, one man was unresponsive on the ground. The other man fled.

Hines was declared dead at the scene. The Pierce County medical examiner later found he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police offered little information about how the man arrested Tuesday afternoon was identified as a suspect in the homicide. In a news release, police said detectives and crime scene technicians established probable cause to arrest him. It’s unclear what led to the shooting between the two men or whether they knew one another.
