Man arrested, charged with murder in fatal shooting of Tacoma woman

A 53-year-old man arrested this week and charged Thursday in the murder of a Tacoma woman allegedly drove the gunman to and from the scene of the fatal shooting, court records say.

Lashaun Danny Miles was charged in Pierce County Superior Court with two counts of second-degree murder in the killing of a 58-year-old woman, who has not been publicly identified.

Pleas of not guilty were entered on Miles’ behalf at arraignment Thursday afternoon. Commissioner Philip Thornton set bail at $1.5 million.

Prosecutors argued that the “egregious” nature of the offense Miles is charged with and his criminal history made that bail amount reasonable. Prosecutors said the defendant has previously been convicted of two “most serious offenses,” meaning that if he is convicted of this crime, he would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole under Washington’s three-strikes law.

Miles has previously been convicted in California of kidnapping and robbery in 1990 and armed robbery in 1997, according to prosecutors. He was also convicted in Tennessee of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a controlled substance in 2010.

According to charging documents, the suspect who fired the fatal gunshot has not been arrested.

Tacoma Police Department responded to the shooting at about 12:20 a.m. Sept. 4 in the 3700 block of South Cedar Street. According to court records, officers found the woman with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
