Shooting at downtown Tacoma homeless encampment leaves man seriously hurt, police say
A shooting Monday at a homeless encampment in downtown Tacoma landed a man in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Tacoma Police Department.
Few details have been released about the incident. In a tweet, police said officers responded at about 1:20 p.m. to a report of someone shot at an encampment at South Tacoma Way and Pacific Avenue. Police spokesperson Wendy Haddow said the 911 caller reported it happened under an overpass that crosses Pacific.
A 30-year-old man with a gunshot wound was found, and Tacoma Fire Department transported him to a hospital, Haddow said. She couldn’t confirm whether he had been staying at the encampment. Police didn’t specify where he was hit, but officers said the man’s condition stabilized at the hospital.
Police don’t yet know what led to the shooting, Haddow said. She said the gunfire caused most people in the area to scatter. Officers canvassed the area for witnesses and were working to obtain surveillance video. The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to contact Crime Stoppers online or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS.
