UPDATED: Crews evacuate 20 homes as Bonney Lake hillside burns

UPDATE as of 7 p.m. All residents have been allowed to go back to their homes, Bonney Lake police said. Firefighters will put out hot spots overnight.

Police spokesman Todd Green said the fire was human caused, but investigators don’t yet know specifically how it started.

INITIAL POST: Crews evacuated about 20 Bonney Lake homes Wednesday as a brush fire burned up a hillside and put them in danger, police said.

East Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters responded to the blaze about 4 p.m. near the 10600 block of 177th Avenue Court East.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Bonney Lake police spokesman Todd Green said it appeared the fire was contained to somewhere between 5 and 10 acres, and no homes were in immediate danger.

Officers had finished all the necessary evacuations, but were standing by in case more were needed later on, he said.

“Luckily, the wind is working in our favor,” Green said.

Further details were not immediately available.
