A brush fire Friday spread to a storage facility near the southeast corner of state Route 512 and Canyon Road East southwest of Puyallup.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue reported that 121 storage units burned. Firefighters spent most of the afternoon and early evening working to prevent the flames from spreading to other nearby buildings, including an apartment complex. They had the flames under control by 6:10 p.m.

Firefighters asked people working at the Canyon Plaza shopping center to leave their businesses to avoid heavy smoke, said Guy Overby of Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.

Traffic on state Route 512 and Canyon Road was snarled by heavy smoke and emergency vehicles.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the brush fire was not immediately known.
