Tacoma police fired gunshots Thursday night while responding to a report of a disturbance between a mother and her 34-year-old son, according to police. No one was wounded in the shooting.

Few details were immediately available Friday morning. In a news release, Tacoma Police Department said officers responded at about 9:27 p.m. to the 600 block of North Fife Street. A spokesperson said neighbors reporting hearing a gunshot and yelling.

It’s unclear what the circumstances of the disturbance between the mother and son was, or how the police response led to gunfire. Police said the son would be booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm and felony harassment.

Two officers fired shots. Police said neither the adult son nor the officers were struck. Those officers — who were not identified — were placed on administrative leave as standard policy.

The son was transported to a hospital for a cut to his hand, according to the release. It reportedly wasn’t related to the gunfire. Police did not specify whether the man brandished a weapon or fired gunshots. Spokesperson Wendy Haddow said officers recovered a gun at the scene.

According to police, this was at least the second time this week the son was arrested in connection to a gunfire incident. On Monday evening, officers responded to the 600 block of North Fife Street after a neighbor reported that a bullet was fired through their apartment wall and struck a cabinet. Haddow said the person who reported it thought the gunshot came from the unit next door.

Officers were advised that the person thought to be the gunman, the 34-year-old man, had already left by the time police arrived, Haddow said. Early the next morning, neighbors called police again and said the man was back. He was reportedly arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm, malicious mischief and domestic-violence harassment. Haddow said a gun wasn’t found. It’s unclear when he was released from custody.

Police said Thursday’s incident is being investigated as an officer-involved shooting. Typically, the Pierce County Force Investigation Team investigates such incidents. According to the release, TPD is investigating because no one was shot.
