A boy’s death was reported as accidental, but Lakewood police now say it was murder

Lakewood police were first told that the shooting of a boy Thursday was an accident. An investigation and the victim’s death later in a hospital pointed instead to murder, police say.

When Lakewood police responded to the report of a shooting around 6:45 p.m. Thursday, they found a boy receiving medical attention from West Pierce Fire & Rescue at a home in the 8900 block of Commercial Street SW.

The boy was transported to Madigan Army Medical Hospital on Joint Base Lewis-McChord where he died sometime later, police said. His name and age have not been made public.

Initially, according to Lakewood Police spokesperson Lt. Jeremy Prater, officers were told the shooting was accidental. As is routine, detectives were called out and conducted an investigation.

When evidence pointed instead to homicide, they identified a suspect. The suspect, who is a juvenile, surrendered at the Lakewood Police Department on Friday afternoon. He will be booked for investigation of murder.
