2 dead after shooting at bus stop across from Parkland elementary school, deputies say
Two young men are dead after a shooting Tuesday at a bus stop across from an elementary school in Parkland, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded just before noon to a call about a shooting at a bus stop close to James Sales Elementary School near 112th Street South and 12th Avenue South.
112th Street South will be closed in both directions throughout the day and into the night due to the shooting and police investigation, Pierce County Sgt. Darren Moss said at the scene. Avoid the area.
Investigators are in the neighborhood, knocking on doors and speaking with witnesses.
Witness statements and surveillance footage show the two young men killed were in an altercation and shot at one another, Moss said.
Deputies can’t yet say for certain that no one else was involved, Moss said. There were others at the bus stop during the shooting.
Deputies arrived at the scene and saw the two young men down on ground at the bus stop. Both were confirmed deceased shortly after deputies arrived, Moss said.
Their identities have not been released. They were in their late teens or early 20s, Moss said.
School is not yet in session. The district’s online calendar says classes start next week.
Further information was not immediately available. Check back for updates.
