Man sentenced to prison for Tacoma motel shooting that nearly killed a man last year

A man who shot another person at a motel in Tacoma’s South End neighborhood, nearly killing him, has been sentenced.

Bryan Jack Crow, 31, was sentenced Monday in Pierce County Superior Court to 35 years in prison for the Jan. 1, 2022, shooting. A jury found Crow guilty for second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm on Sept. 1.

The attempted-murder conviction was vacated due to question over double jeopardy, so no sentence was imposed for that. The 420-month time stemmed from the assault charge with a firearm-sentencing enhancement, court records show.

Crow has a history of criminal convictions, including second-degree assault, participating/aiding in a prison riot and possessing an incendiary device, prosecutors wrote in the probable-cause document.

On the morning of New Year’s Day 2022, a man was shot five times at a motel in the 8600 block of South Hosmer Street. The victim’s friend told police they had been drinking together that evening. At some point, the victim got into an argument with someone staying in Room 207, according to a previous News Tribune story.

Video surveillance showed a man, presumed to be Crow, shooting the victim and then entering Room 207 before leaving with a woman. An ID for Crow was found in the room with a Department of Corrections ID number written on it, the article reported.

According to charging documents, the man who was shot had gunshot wounds to his chest, abdomen, both arms and one leg. He was briefly declared dead at 6:47 a.m., but medical personnel then reported he was still alive. The man was rushed to surgery and survived.

Prior to the shooting, video surveillance showed a man, now presumed to be Crow, talking to the victim. A detective noted the man approached the victim “in an aggressive posture,” and the victim walked around some railing toward him. Then, the man pulled a firearm from his right side, pointed it at the victim and began to fire while walking backwards, documents show.

Crow was arrested and booked on May 9, 2022.
