Tacoma police investigating after hit-and-run driver kills pedestrian
A 44-year-old man was run down by a driver and killed Tuesday night on a street near Tacoma’s South End, according to police. Investigators are working to locate the motorist.
The Tacoma Police Department so far does not have any information about the vehicle that struck the victim on 72nd Street East near A Street.
Officials said the pedestrian had an address in Tacoma. He has not yet been publicly identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Officers were called to the incident at about 10:40 p.m. after passersby reportedly saw an eastbound driver on 72nd Street hit a pedestrian and keep driving, said police spokesperson Det. William Muse. Tacoma Fire Department personnel arrived first and declared the man dead at the scene.
It’s unclear whether the collision occurred at the intersection of A and 72nd streets or mid-block, Muse said. He said detectives were continuing to interview witnesses Wednesday. The roadway has four lanes in that stretch, about two blocks east of Pacific Avenue.
Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact South Sound 911 at its non-emergency number, 253-287-4455. Muse said people can also contact Crime Stoppers Tacoma/Pierce County, which allows anonymous tips submitted online or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS.
