Dispute over car might have led to crash that killed woman in Frederickson, deputies say

A woman was killed after two vehicles struck the car she was in with her daughter in Frederickson on Wednesday afternoon.

The three-car collision took place at 5:42 p.m. in the 5600 block of 176th Street East. A woman was driving a white Subaru with her 64-year-old mother in the passenger seat. Deputies were told that the Subaru was traveling at high speed and went through a red light on 70th Avenue East. At the same time, a pickup had the green light and was making a legal U-turn, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Facebook post.

The truck struck the driver’s side of the Subaru. A white van that had been following the Subaru crashed into it before driving off. The Subaru driver, a 26-year-old woman, was seriously injured. Her mother was pronounced deceased at the scene. Neither of the women was wearing a seat belt, the post said.

The driver of the white van, a 29-year-old man, called to report that he had been chasing his alleged stolen Subaru when it crashed into a pickup. Deputies asked the man to come back to the scene so they could speak to him. The man didn’t show up. He called back and claimed his van had been stolen and he could not return, the post said.

The driver of the Subaru was taken to the hospital and could face possible vehicular homicide charges. The driver of the pickup, a 41-year-old man, was uninjured. Neither was his 2-year-old son who was in a car seat, the post said.

A relative of the women arrived at the scene and told deputies that the woman had been driving the Subaru for weeks and it was not stolen. The relative said that the woman and the registered owner had an argument right before she took the car and drove away.

The man was chasing her and also was witnessed driving at high speed. Deputies have the man’s information and want him to come forward. He is currently facing felony hit-and-run charges, the post said.
