Armed man fatally shot during police pursuit early Monday morning in Tacoma

A Pierce County deputy shot and killed an armed man following a police pursuit in Tacoma early Monday morning.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Department deputies were with a group at 1:16 a.m. at the Smoke and More shop on 808 72nd Street East. One of the people in the group had a felony warrant and was detained, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Facebook post.

Deputies said they were chasing another suspect in the group south on the railroad tracks at 1:44 a.m. The man allegedly had a gun in his hands when he ran from them.

Two deputies fired shots at the man. They provided medical aid, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to a Pierce County Force Investigation Team news release.

Deputies reported the suspect was wearing body armor, the post said.

The deceased man was about 30-40 years old. No deputies were hurt in the shooting, the post said.

PCFIT will lead the investigation.
