2 cars were in head-on crash in Spanaway. One of the drivers had been shot, deputies say

After arriving at the scene of a head-on collision in Spanaway early Wednesday, sheriff’s deputies discovered that one of the drivers had been shot. Now they’re investigating the case as a homicide.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies responded at 4:38 a.m. to the crash at 17400 Spanaway Loop Road South, department spokesman Sgt. Darren Moss Jr. told The News Tribune via email. He said the two vehicles were going at slow speeds before the collision.

The male driver then went to check on the 47-year-old female driver and realized that she was unconscious, Moss said. The victim was pronounced dead after authorities arrived.

“When our deputies got here, they found a gunshot wound, and right now we’re investigating this as a homicide,” Moss said, according to KOMO News. “We believe she was shot while she was driving up the roadway here and then veered off to the side of the road and had this head-on collision.”

Forensic investigators and detectives are working with traffic deputies, Moss told The News Tribune. The SWAT team was contacted to search along the wood line for possible evidence and any suspects.

Drivers were asked to avoid Spanaway Loop Road South as it was expected to be shut down for several hours between 174th and 176th streets, Moss said.

“We know there were at least two other vehicles behind this woman’s car before she veered off into the opposite side of the road,” he continued. “If anyone saw anything this morning, please call the Sheriff’s Department or you can make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.”

People with video of or information about the incident can contact the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. They can also submit a tip anonymously with Crime Stoppers via Tpcrimestoppers.com or the P3 tips app, and by calling 1-800-222-TIPS.
