A vehicle traveling north on U.S. 101 struck and killed a 50-year-old man on the right shoulder just west of Olympia on Friday, according to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol.

After the collision, which occurred just north of state Route 8 at 7:04 p.m., the vehicle came to a stop but then left the scene, the press memo said. Traffic was blocked for two hours and 39 minutes.

The pedestrian, who was from Aberdeen, was declared dead at the scene, according to the memo.

The driver, a 27-year-old man, was later arrested. He was not injured and is being investigated for vehicular homicide, DUI and felony hit and run. He is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the memo said.

Trooper Dakota Russell said that Washington State Patrol found the driver either when he turned himself in or a witness called his location in. Russell wasn’t immediately able to confirm which of those reports was correct.
