Suspected explosive turned in as hazardous waste at Tacoma landfill

A suspected explosive device prompted the Tacoma dump to briefly close its Hazardous Waste Station and Recycling Center on Tuesday.

Someone turned in the device as hazardous waste at the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Station at 3510 S. Mullen St., the city said.

Bomb experts responded after the landfill called about 3:30 p.m.. The investigators dismantled a pipe that had caps on both ends and found it was not explosive, Tacoma police spokesman Dan Davis said.

Crews closed the dump for about 10 minutes at 4:45 p.m. as they investigated.

Anyone looking to dispose of an explosive should contact law enforcement and should not move the material, Davis said.
