Man, 35, fatally shot by police in Sumner following crisis call on railroad tracks

Police shot and killed a 35-year-old man following a crisis call in Sumner over the weekend.

Sumner police were dispatched at 6:34 p.m. Sunday to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train tracks over state Route 410, according to a news release.

Washington State Patrol, the Puyallup Police Department, Bonney Lake Police Department and a civilian crisis responder provided assistance, the release said.

The man was armed with a knife, according to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team.

The incident led to the use of lethal force by members of the Sumner, Puyallup and Bonney Lake police departments at 8:34 p.m., the release said. The shooting occurred after multiple strategies, including negotiations and less than lethal tactics, were used, the release said.

No officers were injured, the release said.

PCFIT is taking over the investigation, per state law. During the investigation, Traffic Avenue was closed between Thompson Street and Main Street.

All officers involved with the shooting were placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The exact number of officers who were placed on leave will be released at a later time, according to PCFIT.

It is unclear what led up to the shooting and why lethal force needed to be used.
