Body-camera footage shows man’s arrest after he allegedly fired at Tacoma building

A 44-year-old man accused of shooting at the security lights at a Tacoma business attempted to escape arrest before he was finally taken into police custody.

Officers were dispatched at 2:30 a.m. to reports of a building alarm going off in the 3900 block of South Orchard Street on Oct. 25. When they arrived, officers noticed bullet damage to the building, according to the Tacoma Police Department on X.

The post said officers heard gunshots nearby as they were waiting for backup and moved alongside a patrol car for cover. Police approached a fenced area and saw the alleged shooter inside a vehicle.

Charging documents say the man was inside a van belonging to an electric company next door to the business police were dispatched to. The man exited the van and allegedly did not comply when police called out.

Officers cornered the man, and he was taken into custody after a short chase. Police also recovered a discarded gun and they believe the man had been shooting at the business’ security lights, the post said.

The man was booked into the Pierce County Jail, and prosecutors charged him with two counts of first-degree burglary, according to court documents.

Officers searched the building but did not find anyone inside. The man reportedly told police that he was inside the van because he wanted a warm place to sleep for the night, prosecutors wrote.
