A man died Wednesday evening after he was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run collision in Tacoma’s West End, Tacoma police said. The driver was later arrested.

The victim was crossing South 12th Street at Vassault Street when he was hit by a driver who left the scene. A witness followed the suspect vehicle and was able to provide information to officers, said Tacoma police spokesperson detective William Muse on Thursday.

Officers arrested the suspected driver at a residence. Intoxicants are believed to have played a role in the incident, Muse said.

The victim died at the scene, which is just south of Temple Beth El and north of Tacoma Community College.
