Suspected DUI driver caused fatal wreck Sunday night on I-5 near Milton, troopers say

A suspected DUI driver caused a two-car collision Sunday night on Interstate 5 near Milton that left an Indiana man dead, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers said a Ford Mustang occupied by three men was traveling south on the interstate at about 11:40 p.m. when the driver struck the back of a Toyota Camry, causing both vehicles to spin out before stopping on the road.

A 35-year-old man driving the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from the State Patrol. The victim was from Goshen, Indiana. He has not been publicly identified.

The driver of the Mustang, a 26-year-old Auburn man, faces charges of DUI and vehicular homicide, troopers said. He was booked into the King County Correctional Facility on Monday. The State Patrol also referred obstruction charges for a 23-year-old passenger. That man was injured and transported to the St. Joseph Medical Center.

Troopers said the cause of the wreck was under investigation, and drugs or alcohol were suspected to be involved.

All lanes of southbound I-5 were closed for the collision, the Washington State Department of Transportation said in a post on X. Traffic was diverted to state Route 18. Troopers said the roadway remained closed for about four-and-a-half hours.
