31-year-old man killed in Tacoma hit-and-run officially identified, ME reports
A 31-year-old man has been identified as the pedestrian killed during a suspected hit-and-run in Tacoma two weeks ago.
Devin Bond died from multiple blunt-force injuries Nov. 27 near South Whitman Street and South 12th Street. His manner of death was listed as an accident, the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office wrote in an news release.
Anthony Thomas Albers, 34, was charged in Pierce County Superior Court with DUI vehicular homicide, failure to remain at an accident scene resulting in death and reckless driving. Albers was ordered held in the Pierce County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, court records show. He was released on Dec. 3 on bond.
A witness told police the night of the alleged hit-and-run they saw a green pickup going at a high speed. It was clear the driver was intoxicated, charging documents say. As the vehicle approached South Whitman Street, the witness saw the pickup hit Bond, who went airborne. The driver continued west on South 12th Street.
When police contacted Albers later, he allegedly appeared intoxicated and an officer smelled alcohol on his breath, documents show. Albers claimed that “he didn’t think” he was involved in the accident. He also allegedly said he drove past the accident scene and something smacked his truck.
An online obituary for Bond described him as a gentle soul and that “he cared so much about the people around him.”
“He was not a fan of sadness or depressing energy. If he sensed it, he would quickly crack a joke to try to brighten everyone’s mood,” the obit said.
