A 57-year-old man was arrested in Gig Harbor after he and an accomplice tried to steal an entire ATM machine early Friday morning, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the 5300 block of Point Fosdick Drive after a video-security company informed them that two people were using a truck to steal the machine from a bank, the Gig Harbor Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The men were attaching a chain to the machine, which connected to a truck when officers arrived, the post said. Police say the truck was likely stolen.

“The officer challenged both subjects and they fled on foot,” the post said. “Officers from GHPD, Pierce County, and Kitsap County set up a containment perimeter and a K9 unit was requested from Kitsap County.”

A dog tracked the 57-year-old man across state Route 16 to some bushes at 5500 Olympic Drive, the post said. He was arrested and booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of attempted theft and malicious mischief. Additional charges might be added after police determine where the truck was from.

The second man has not been found, the post said.

There was about $60,000 in damages to the ATM and bank’s building, the post said.
