A 21-year-old woman was killed after an allegedly intoxicated motorcyclist gave her a ride and lost control of his motorcycle in an area south of Roy on Saturday, according to a news release by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 9 p.m. to a motorcycle wreck with a passenger who had died at 332nd Street South and state Route 507. The motorcyclist, a 26-year-old man, had allegedly shown up to a party earlier and offered to give people rides, the release said.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune in a phone call that the man allegedly didn’t see an intersection and swerved when he lost control of the bike, and both he and his passenger were ejected. Neither of them were wearing helmets when the motorcycle crashed at 332nd Street South and state Route 507, the release alleged.

“Speed was a huge factor in it,” Cappetto said. “He was going at a very high rate of speed.”

The collision blocked state Route 507 for approximately five hours, according to Cappetto.

Washington State Patrol also arrived on-scene and administered a preliminary breath test to the motorcycle driver, which allegedly found his blood-alcohol content well over the legal limit, according to Cappetto.

Asked about the man’s relation to the party goers, Cappetto said it seems that most people at the party were acquainted with him or familiar with him.

He was booked Saturday night into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide and DUI, Cappetto said.
