A police pursuit beginning in Sumner ended with a man jumping off an overpass following a crash Tuesday night.

The incident began when the 36-year-old driver of a vehicle swerved on Valley Avenue at about 9:18 p.m. and nearly struck a Sumner police vehicle that was headed the opposite way, according to the city on X.

“The vehicle continued southbound on Valley Avenue, traveling in the northbound lane. Suspecting impaired driving, the officer initiated pursuit of the vehicle,” the post said.

The chase continued onto westbound state Route 410 and then onto westbound state Route 512, the post said. The driver crashed into two other vehicles.

After the driver left his car, he crossed all traffic lanes and jumped off the overpass, the post said. He landed near Pioneer Avenue in Puyallup.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue crews took the man to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the post said. Another driver who was in one of the vehicles involved in the crash was taken to Tacoma General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Westbound 512 near Pioneer was closed as a result of the incident.

Metro’s Major Collision Response Team will be investigating the incident, the post said.
