Man shot, killed by Pierce County deputy during confrontation in Parkland

A man was fatally shot by a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy Monday afternoon in Parkland after deputies were dispatched for a report of a suspicious person who appeared to be trying to set a building on fire.

No deputies were hurt during the shooting, which occurred at about 5 p.m. in the 11200 block of C Street South, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and the Pierce County Force Investigation Team.

Deputies responded at 4:21 p.m. to a report of a man who was allegedly involved in previous burglaries breaking and throwing objects, and then trying to light a building on fire, sheriff’s office spokesperson Carly Cappetto said.

Deputies confronted him at the Pacific Pride gas station in the 110th block of Pacific Avenue South and pursued him on foot for a few blocks to the area of 112th Street South and C Street South, where deputies said shots were fired, Cappetto said.

A spokesperson for PCFIT, Sgt. Charles Porche of the Lakewood Police Department, confirmed Tuesday that one deputy fired shots during the incident. He did not have additional information about whether the suspect was armed.

The Sheriff’s Office posted on X that PCFIT will be in charge of the investigation. More information will be released by the team in the future.

The social media post asked people to stay out of the area.
