Tacoma street-racing event draws 100 participants, spectators and then deputies
A street-racing event involving a group of about 100 spectators and participants led deputies on a chase in Pierce County on Sunday, according to a news release from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
A call about the event at East 11th Street and Alexander Avenue in Tacoma came in at about 12:28 a.m., Sheriff’s Office spokesperson deputy Carly Cappetto said. People were allegedly “taking over intersections and recklessly driving,” according to the release.
Deputies responded, and multiple vehicles fled. After a chase, one of the fleeing vehicles crashed at South 21st Street and state Route 509, and deputies arrested four people, alleging “several misdemeanor and felony charges around street racing and eluding,” according to the release and Cappetto.
Cappetto said the four were young men around the ages of 18 to 23. There were no injuries associated with the street-racing event or the crash. The crash caused minor damage to another vehicle, but that driver wasn’t hurt.
Deputies don’t have the total number of cars that were racing. The Sheriff’s Office worked to shut down the event as part of an emphasis involving multiple agencies in Pierce County, she said.
