Access to a Pierce County school was blocked after a car crashed into a power pole in Graham on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire crews were dispatched at 1:45 p.m. in the 24200 block of Mathias Road East to the crash that sparked a brush fire. The fire was threatening building structures, including Centennial Elementary School, according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue on X.

The fire was brought under control, and no buildings were damaged, the post said.

The downed power lines on the road blocked access to the school, and fire crews were on scene as of 3:30 p.m.

The driver suffered minor injuries, the post said.

“Response included 2 Battalion Chiefs, 2 brush trucks, 2 fire engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 medic unit, and Crew 6 (our new group of wildfire apprentices),” according to the post.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, according to a department spokesperson.
