Tacoma man killed in South End shooting IDed. Suspect held for competency test
A Tacoma man who was fatally shot outside of an apartment complex last month has been identified as Keith Sweeney, 47, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The office wrote in a news release that Sweeney died from a gunshot wound to the chest on June 27 near the 8800 block of Pacific Avenue South. His manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Roberto Juan Salas, 38, was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
He is being held without bail at the Pierce County Jail as he undergoes a competency test, which was ordered by a Pierce County Superior Court commissioner. A competency hearing is scheduled for July 15.
Salas is accused of fatally shooting Sweeney after an argument inside an apartment over stolen marijuana, according to charging documents.
Detectives learned from a mental health case worker that Salas was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He had recently missed an appointment and medication appointment, documents show.
Detectives identified Salas as the alleged shooter through his phone records, surveillance footage from the apartment and witness statements.
