Pickup driver accused of DUI, crashing into Pierce County deputy’s patrol car

The driver of a pickup has been arrested on suspicion of DUI after crashing head-on into a Pierce County sheriff deputy’s patrol car Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic deputies were dispatched at about 5:15 p.m. to the 3100 block of River Road East for the crash. The deputy involved in the crash was driving to a call near the area. The deputy was in a left turn lane onto 31st Avenue Court East, according to the Sheriff’s Office blotter.

“The suspected DUI driver was heading the opposite direction when he claims he braked to avoid a crash with the vehicle in front of him, causing him to veer into the center turn lane where the deputy was legally standing,” the post said.

The post said that the airbags went off in the deputy’s car. Neither the deputy nor the pickup driver was injured.

The pickup driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Washington State Patrol assisted and arrested the driver after an investigation.

The post said the deputy’s patrol car was towed and is no longer operable.
