An intersection in Parkland was shut down after a crash left one dead Wednesday morning.

A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a driver who had a Department of Corrections warrant for his arrest at about 9:25 a.m. There were three people in the driver’s car, and he drove off at a high rate of speed, according to Pierce County sheriff’s spokesperson deputy Carly Cappetto.

The driver went through a red light 10 blocks away and struck another vehicle going through 112th Street South and Ainsworth Avenue South on a green light. The 20-year-old female driving the vehicle died, Cappetto said.

The driver ran off, while the two passenger remained in his car. They were all taken into custody, she said. Both passengers were taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

Cappetto said the driver, 47, and front passenger, 48, were males. There was a 36-year-old female in the back seat.

Washington State Patrol will take over the investigation since the Sheriff’s Office was the agency to conduct the traffic stop.

The roadway at 112th Street South and Ainsworth was expected to be shut down for a while for the investigation.
