Egg-throwing teens targeting vehicles in Gig Harbor get in serious crash
A group of 17-year-old boys accused of driving around Gig Harbor on the afternoon of Oct. 22 and throwing eggs at other vehicles was involved in a crash while trying to flee from police.
The first report came in around 5:45 p.m. from the Peacock Hill and North Harborview Drive area, and over the next several hours police received more reports about the same group. The teenagers were suspected to be driving a gray or black sedan, according to the Gig Harbor Police Department in a news release.
The release said police went to the 3200 block of Harborview Drive at about 9:30 p.m. for a vandalism report. People in a dark-colored sedan had thrown eggs at someone’s vehicle, which caused the windshield to shatter. No one was injured, and police searched the area for the vehicle involved.
Officers found a gray sedan shortly after, and the driver appeared to be involved in a road-rage incident at Olympic Drive. The driver was interacting with another vehicle, the release said. The driver got back inside the sedan and drove through a red light onto westbound state Route 16 when the officer approached.
Several teenagers were inside the sedan, and the officer began a traffic stop. The driver drove off at high speed and recklessly, the release said. The sedan also went through multiple traffic lanes, but officers did not initiate a pursuit.
During a search by police, a person inside the gray sedan threw an egg at an officer’s windshield. The car then took off at high speed, the release said. Officers did not start a pursuit, but they believed the people in the sedan were contained because they were in an area with several dead-end streets. Police created a perimeter in the area.
“It was later discovered that the suspect vehicle, traveling at a dangerously high speed failed to navigate a turn, left the roadway, struck a sidewalk, destroyed a Peninsula Light utility pole, crashed through a residential wooden fence, and came to rest after damaging a backyard chicken coop,” according to the news release.
The three teenagers ran off, the release said. A Pierce County Sheriff’s Office deputy helped Gig Harbor officers track and look for the teenagers. They were arrested and taken into custody.
There was significant damage to the sedan, the light pole, fence, chicken coop and surrounding property, the release said. No one was injured.
The teenagers were released to the custody of their parents or guardians. The initial case will be forwarded to the juvenile division of the prosecutor’s office for review.
