1 dead, 1 injured in motorcycle crash following police chase in Lakewood

A man died Tuesday after crashing a motorcycle into the “Welcome to Lakewood” sign following a police pursuit in Lakewood, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

A female passenger on the motorcycle was rushed to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. Her condition was unknown early Tuesday evening.

The chase began after King County sheriff's deputies noticed a motorcyclist matching the description of a person involved with domestic-violence charges who made threats to kill people with a gun earlier in the day, King County Sgt. Earl Seratt told The News Tribune. The motorcycle was believed to be stolen.

The deputies attempted a traffic stop, and the motorcyclist fled, eventually crashing into the “Welcome to Lakewood” sign at the intersection of 100th Street Southwest and South Tacoma Way. He died at the scene.

Lakewood Police Department is investigating the incident.
