Driver in custody after striking 2 people, vehicle in Pierce County
A driver is in custody after striking two people and then another vehicle in Pierce County on Monday.
Deputies were dispatched close to 2 p.m. to the 2400 block of 96th Street South for a crash.
Two males, one on a bicycle and another on a skateboard, were crossing from south to north in front of the Woodmark Apartments. According to witnesses, a vehicle sped up and hit them, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office deputy Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune. The driver did not try to stop or slow down, witnesses said.
After the driver struck the 31-year-old bicyclist, he over-corrected and hit another vehicle carrying a female driver and approximate 1-year-old child head-on, Cappetto said. They were both taken to a hospital with non-serious injuries.
The person on the skateboard was not injured. The bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries.
Cappetto said the driver is in custody for suspicion of vehicular assault. She said if the bicyclist dies the potential charge could escalate to vehicular homicide.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
