A 40-year-old man was arrested after a robbery and stabbing at a grocery store in the Puyallup area Sunday afternoon.

Deputies were dispatched at about 3:28 p.m. to the 9500 block of 176th Street East for a robbery. The man suspected of the robbery drove off in a U-Haul and was found within minutes, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson deputy Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune via email.

Another person, a 31-year-old man, had reportedly been stabbed where the robbery occurred, Cappetto said. Information on his injuries was not immediately available.

The suspect initially stopped the U-Haul and then drove off eastbound, she said. Deputies were authorized to use a precision immobilization technique maneuver at 40 miles per hour.

“The pursuit traveled westbound on 160th Street East crossing over to 152nd. The fleeing vehicle was stop sticked at Brookdale Road East and continued northbound on Waller Road East. The fleeing vehicle slid into oncoming lanes and struck a vehicle at the bend just west of 30th Avenue East,” Cappetto said.

The occupants in the vehicle that was struck included the man who was driving the car and a woman who was a passenger. They were cleared and released from the crash scene.

Deputies saw a weapon in the robbery suspect’s truck, Cappetto said, and they arrested him and took him to a hospital after he complained of pain.

The truck was taken to South Hill while a search warrant was pending. No deputies were injured.

Three cellphone charging mounts valued at around $90 were found in the man’s red backpack, Cappetto said.
