WSP asks witnesses to rock-throwing assault in Tacoma to come forward

State troopers are asking witnesses to come forward related to an incident over the weekend where a man allegedly threw a cement block at a passing vehicle, leaving a passenger with life-threatening injuries in Tacoma.

A man was on Interstate 705 on Nov. 22 between the 9th Street on-ramp and the state Route 509 off-ramp when he allegedly threw the cement block at a passing vehicle. The block shattered a window of the vehicle, which carried a 63-year-old woman and 64-year-old man, both from Puyallup.

The man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after he was treated at hospital in Tacoma. Prosecutors wrote in charging documents the left side of his face/skull was crushed.

Prosecutors charged Trevor Wagner, 38, with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, according to court records.

Document show Wagner said he threw the brick because he was having a mental breakdown and claimed no one was calling 911.

Wagner is being held at the Pierce County Jail without bail pending a competency evaluation. Court records show he has a hearing scheduled for Dec. 8.

Detectives are looking for anyone who saw the incident happen or saw Wagner in the roadway or in the area that night.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detective Tessa Schahfer at tessa.schahfer@wsp.wa.gov or by phone at 253-538-3172 or 360-819-6341, according to a WSP news release.
