Driver collides with State Patrol car in Pierce County, injuring sergeant

A Washington State Patrol sergeant suffered minor injuries Wednesday morning when a distracted pickup driver collided with his patrol car head on.

The incident occurred in Parkland on Steele Street south of 112th Street South, where the road begins to curve before turning into Spanaway Loop Road. Photos posted on X by Trooper Kameron Watts showed a white truck crashed into the side of a patrol car, which had damage to its driver’s side tire and hood.

Watts said the sergeant was trapped in his car. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. Deputy Carly Cappetto, a spokesperson, said deputies responded at 8:50 a.m. A preliminary investigation indicated the woman driving the pickup was texting on her phone and went into oncoming traffic, hitting the patrol car.

The pickup driver was not injured, Cappetto said. The driver remained on the scene while deputies investigated, and she was cited for negligent driving.
