Lakewood man arrested after baby dies from injuries ‘not initially explainable’

A Lakewood father was arrested this week after his infant died from critical injuries.

Officers were dispatched March 5 to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma after the baby was taken there the day before, Lakewood Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Charles Porche told The News Tribune via email.

The injuries the baby sustained were “not initially explainable,” Porche wrote.

Detectives learned through their investigation that the 21-year-old father allegedly caused the injuries.

Porche wrote the baby died Monday. The father was arrested the same day and booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of homicide by abuse.

Pierce County prosecutors are requesting a 72-hour hold in court Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the department. The man remains in custody at the jail.

This is the first homicide in Lakewood this year.
