A 49-year-old Tacoma man pleaded guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder for shooting his wife to death last year.
Darrin L. Brooks will be sentenced Sept. 25. He faces a sentence of 29 to 38 years in prison.
Renee Brooks, 28, was discovered dead July 4, 2014, by a friend who grew worried because she hadn’t heard from the victim in some time, court records show.
Neighbors told police that they’d heard two or three “pops” coming from the couple’s apartment the morning of July 3 and that they’d seen Darrin Brooks leave the apartment a short time later.
Brooks remained at large for a few days before being arrested.
During an interview with detectives, he said he’d gotten into an argument with his wife and the disagreement escalated to a physical fight, court records show.
He told detectives he blacked out at one point and didn’t remember what happened next, the records show.
As part of his plea agreement in Pierce County Superior Court, Brooks admitted to shooting Renee Brooks twice in the head.
He will remain jailed until sentencing.
